Who Fyodor Dostoevsky was
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was born in Moscow in 1821 and died in St Petersburg in 1881. Sentenced to death for his part in a radical circle in 1849, reprieved at the last moment and sent to a Siberian prison camp, he went on to write Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons and The Brothers Karamazov.
He wrote under constant deadline pressure, and from 1866 much of his work was dictated. That makes the handwriting he did leave all the more interesting.
The story of the signature
Dostoevsky signed with his initial and surname, “Ф. Достоевский” (F. Dostoevsky). In the spelling used before 1918 the surname ended in “-скій”, which is how it appears on his own letters and on facsimiles printed in his lifetime and just after.
His working notebooks are full of more than notes. Alongside plans for the novels he drew faces and Gothic arches and practised calligraphy, writing words and names over and over in careful, ornamental scripts. Scholars have published these pages as a study in their own right.
The same interest went into his fiction. In The Idiot, Prince Myshkin is a gifted calligrapher who shows off by imitating historical hands, including the signature of a medieval abbot, and talks knowledgeably about English, French and Russian styles of handwriting.
In 1866, facing a contract that would have handed his future copyrights to a publisher, he dictated the short novel The Gambler to a young stenographer, Anna Grigoryevna Snitkina, in under a month. They married the following year, and she took his dictation for the rest of his career.
What makes it distinctive
The standard Russian formal signature, with the first name reduced to Ф.
He knew the conventions of different scripts well enough to build a scene of a novel around them.
Pre-1918 documents end the surname with “-скій” rather than the modern “-ский”.
His notebooks show repeated, decorated words, a habit of practice behind his everyday signature.
How to give your signature a similar feel
- In the signature generator Type tab, Mr De Haviland with a small slant gives a narrow, controlled Latin signature in the same spirit. Try a Slant of 4° to 6°.
- Use initial plus surname, and keep spacing even between letters. Precision is the point.
- Practise your signature on paper the way he practised words in his notebooks, then photograph the best version and use the Upload tab to make a transparent PNG.
- If you sign in Cyrillic, drawing your name on the Draw tab pad gives the most natural result.
