Who Henry VIII was

Henry VIII (1491–1547) became king in 1509. He is remembered for his six marriages and for breaking with the Pope to end his first, which led to the English Reformation, the dissolution of the monasteries and the king’s position as head of the Church of England.

The story of the signature

As king, Henry signed “Henry R”, with R for Rex, Latin for king. Documents needing the royal signature came to him in great numbers, but he disliked writing, and relatively few of his letters are entirely in his own hand.

The best-known exceptions are his love letters to Anne Boleyn, written during their courtship in the late 1520s. Seventeen of them survive in the Vatican Library.

In the last years of his reign, as his health declined, routine signing was handed over to a dry stamp. A clerk pressed the stamp into the paper to leave an impression of the king’s signature and then inked it in by hand, and lists were kept of the documents signed this way. Whether Henry’s will was signed by the king himself or with the stamp has been debated by historians.

What makes it distinctive

Henry R

His first name and a single title letter, the standard form of an English royal signature.

Signature by proxy

The dry stamp produced his signature without his hand, an early example of a signature reproduced on someone else’s authority.

Rare in full letters

Letters written entirely by Henry are scarce, which is why the Anne Boleyn letters are so well known.

How to give your signature a similar feel

  • Royal signatures pair a first name with a single letter. For fun, try your first name and your surname initial in the signature generator, such as “Maria T” or “James K”.
  • Great Vibes on the Type tab gives a formal script with generous capitals; keep Slant close to 0° for a stately, upright look.
  • Henry’s stamp is a reminder that a signature is only as safe as whoever holds it. Keep your saved signature image private and add it only to documents you have read.
  • Want stamp-like consistency? Sign once on paper, upload it through the Upload tab, and reuse the transparent PNG instead of redrawing each time.
